Takoradi — or “Tadi,” as everyone calls it — is the relaxed harbour city of Ghana’s southwest and the gateway to the country’s dreamiest coast. Part of the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, it’s an oil-and-port town with a famous round market, a friendly pace and a strategic location: from here the western beaches, the Nzulezo stilt village and the Ankasa rainforest are all within reach. The vibe
Easygoing, coastal and a little industrial. Takoradi is Ghana’s third-busiest urban area and its main western port, given energy by the offshore oil industry, yet it keeps a laid-back, walkable feel around its leafy older quarters. Together with neighbouring Sekondi it forms the metropolis of Sekondi-Takoradi — your hub for exploring the Western Region’s beaches and forests.

In the city
Takoradi’s centrepiece is Market Circle, a huge circular market that’s the social and commercial heart of town — busy, colourful and worth a wander. Over in Sekondi, Fort Orange (now a working lighthouse) nods to the colonial past, and Monkey Hill offers a surprising patch of forest within the city. It’s a place to ease into rather than rush.
Gateway to the western coast
Takoradi’s real value is as a base. Within an hour or two you can reach Busua (surf, lodges, slow days), neighbouring Dixcove and Fort Metal Cross, the dreamy far-west beaches of Axim, Lou Moon and Cape Three Points, the 500-year-old Nzulezo stilt village (via Beyin), and the Ankasa rainforest. When to go

Getting there and around
Takoradi is about 4 hours west of Accra by road, or a short domestic flight to Takoradi airport. Around town use taxis and shared transport; for the western beaches and far-west day trips, a hired car or driver is far easier given the distances. See our flights guide.
Where to stay and eat
Takoradi has a good spread of business and mid-range hotels (handy for the oil trade), making a comfortable, well-connected base. The food is coastal — fresh seafood, grilled tilapia and banku — with lively local spots and a few smarter restaurants; see our food guide.
