Where to book — and what to check first
In Accra, the neighbourhood matters as much as the room. Osu puts you in the middle of the nightlife and street food; Cantonments and Airport Residential are quieter, leafier and pricier; East Legon is modern and spread-out; and Labone and Ridge sit comfortably in between. Before you pay, check the things that actually bite in Ghana. Ask whether the place has a generator or inverter — power cuts (“dumsor”) still happen, and a stay without backup means no fan, fridge or Wi-Fi when the grid drops. Confirm there’s a water tank or reliable supply, working air-conditioning (not just a fan) if you feel the heat, and real security — a gated compound or a manned reception. Read the most recent reviews, not just the average score, and look for guests who mention power, water and safety by name.
Pay smart, too: many guesthouses prefer cash or mobile money, and card surcharges are common — our money in Ghana guide explains cedis, cards and MoMo. Screenshot your booking and the host’s number, and if a deal looks far too cheap for the area, treat it with caution. That’s exactly the gap a little due diligence closes.
One more habit that saves grief: for anything booked off social media or a WhatsApp listing rather than a known platform, avoid sending a full deposit up front. A small holding amount, or paying on arrival once you’ve seen the room, weeds out the handful of listings that look far better in photos than in person — the exact problem a “verified” approach exists to solve.
