This 14-day itinerary takes you from the slave castles of the coast through Kumasi’s living kingdom to elephants on foot at Mole, with a green Volta detour to finish. It’s the definitive first-timer’s “see it all” route, built the way locals actually travel: loops out of Accra, with a flight to save the long northern haul. Here’s the plan, day by day.

Days 1–2 — Accra
Start in the capital: Black Star Square and the Nkrumah Memorial, Jamestown and Makola, a gallery and a night out. On day two, cool off at Aburi and cruise Lake Volta from Akosombo. See our Accra guide.
Days 3–5 — The historic coast
Drive west to Cape Coast. Tour Cape Coast and Elmina castles with a guide and walk through the Door of No Return; do Kakum’s canopy walk early one morning; and reward yourself with a day at a western beach like Busua. The emotional and natural heart of the trip (our Cape Coast guide).
Days 6–7 — Kumasi & the Asante heartland
Head inland to Kumasi. Visit Manhyia Palace to understand the living Asante kingdom, brave the vast Kejetia Market, and spend a day in the craft villages — kente at Bonwire, adinkra at Ntonso — or unwind at Lake Bosomtwe. See our Kumasi guide.
Days 8–10 — North to Mole
Fly Kumasi/Accra to Tamale, then transfer to Mole National Park for a walking safari with elephants, with the ancient Larabanga mosque nearby. Two nights on the escarpment, watching wildlife from the lodge. The flight saves a brutal drive (our Savannah Region guide).
Days 11–13 — The Volta hills

Day 14 — Back to Accra
Return to Accra for last-minute shopping and your flight home, two weeks and the length of the country behind you.

Bases: Accra (start/end), Cape Coast/Elmina, Kumasi, the Mole escarpment lodges, and the Volta (Hohoe/Amedzofe). Book the Mole lodges well ahead — they’re limited and fill up in the dry season.
Tips to make it work
- Fly the northern leg (Accra/Kumasi–Tamale) — it saves a full day each way.
- Hire a driver for the coast, Kumasi and Volta sections.
- Over-budget travel time and keep one flexible day.
